Discussion:
Looking for PHP alternatives to mailman

Or I suppose ANY alternatives.

There is Sympa, which seems to have an even worse reputation than
mailman to configure, and the last two seemed to have died for the
most part and have been taken over by mailman...?

Majordomo was last updated in 2000.

ezmlm

Listserv is commercial with a pretty hefty tag. But worth looking
into, I suppose.

It does look like Majordomo 2 has been kept up to date, or at least
their nightly build script has stayed up to date. http://www.mj2.org/

I guess any "Mailing List Manager" would work. It needs to be a
two-way exchange, not like PHPList which is a one-way announcement
type thing.

I am posting to this list because a) it is on topic as I would prefer
a PHP version and b) you can reply to me off-list with non-PHP ideas.

Commercial and free (free/OSS is the best of course) ideas are open.

Also, it must be self-hosted. Due to the content on the mailing list
it cannot be hosted at a third party provider.

I am sure must be many more options out there.

http://www.hotscripts.com/category/php/scripts-programs/mailing-list-managers/
seems to have a lot but most so far appear to be one directional
"newsletter" type programs. I'm looking for a mailman type program.
Perhaps "mailing list manager" is not the right title?

You may want to take a look at this PHP package. It is a complete
solution to manage the subscribers and send messages to mailing lists or
newsletters.

Dunno about Sympa, but is mailman really _that_ bad? For the last 4-5
years, I've been running a few low-volume lists on mailman, works very
well.

The configuration options give me a headache - and the guy who will be
'owning' it too.

Also, we need specific things for legal reasons and we're not sure
mailman is properly going to safeguard against it. We've done some
trials but we're still not 100% sure.

except not touched since 2003 it seems.

sigh. well there was some updates in 2006, .. this whole site is
outdated and riddled with bad links. i don't understand why there's so
little variety out there for this. there's a million one directional
mailers...

Well, for one thing, the latter is usually for commercial purposes, the
former isn't.

If active development is important to you, mailman is currently active.

mailing lists can definately support commercial ventures. i am doing
this for my company, in fact.

yeah i know. i might be tempted to try ecartis still as long as it
supports the proper mail headers and doesn't have any obvious
exploits.

Yes, so am I, but operating the mailing list is not the commercial
purpose in itself. I.e. it doesn't make any money, whereas the
millions of directional mailers do.

I don't know it very well, but I am subscribed to a couple of lists that
are run on ecartis. Seems to work quite well.

That's because one directional doesn't require a daemon that has to eat
a high volume incoming mail cue and then decide what to do with the
messages.

understood, btu there's plenty of options for nearly every type of
software out there.

surprisingly enough there aren't many commercial options either...
